TEDx BeaconStreet: The Future of Food

James Miner, Principal and head of planning and urban design practice at Sasaki Associates, delivered a TEDx Talk during the 2015 TEDxBeaconStreet Conference. In “The Future of Food,” Miner discusses the divide between agricultural production and (sub)urban development, calling attention to the perverse food American system where rural Iowans are surrounded by fields of corn and soybeans inedible to humans.

Calling for integration between agriculture and urban planning, Miner asks, “But what if there was a different way? What if instead of development marching its way through agriculture, what if agriculture made its way into development and our cities? What if there was a symbiotic relationship between the two rather than a confrontational one?”

This symbiosis between urban farmers like Green City Growers and real estate developers has been highlighted in the news recently, while projects like the Assembly Row Community Garden and the Whole Foods Lynnfield rooftop farm are seeing Miner’s vision realized.
