Whether new to urban farming/gardening or a seasoned pro, Green City Growers’ professionals have a wealth of knowledge to share gathered from years of experience in the field. Our lineup of intensive urban farming courses and workshops offer something for everyone.
Intensive Urban Agriculture Courses
The Urban Agriculture Ambassador Program (UAAP) is sponsored by the Mayor of Somerville for residents to learn how to grow food in one of the most densely populated cities in the country. Each spring, 18 residents are selected from a pool of applicants to everything about installing and maintaining raised bed gardens over the course of four Saturdays. Free to Somerville residents.
The Urban Farming Course is open to everyone, and is an intensive weekend course that is completed in two and a half days. In this course you will build a bed, install irrigation, plant, harvest, and everything in between.
Seasonal Urban Agriculture Workshops
Seasonal Workshops are held throughout the year to compliment each part of the growing season. These workshops are short (one to two hours), and generally held mid-week in the evening for maximum convenience. Learn to build a raised bed in winter, how to use succession planting in spring, and how to preserve the harvest in fall.
Jessie Banhazl. Jessie was new to growing vegetables when she founded GCG in 2008, but quickly learned the ropes and is an expert at teaching others who are new to growing their own food in tricky to grow in places. Her knowledge of how to use your harvest in the kitchen is unmatched.
Erik Sol. Erik applies his innovation and ingenuity to the GCG Builds and Installations department daily, creating solutions to problems that have plagued urban and suburban gardeners for ages. He’s a master at teaching anyone how to build a garden equipped for success year after year.
Laura Feddersen. Laura has worked in a variety of farm settings, acquiring a wealth of knowledge for troubleshooting pests and diseases using organic methods, and innovating along the way. She specializes in teaching crop mapping for managing pests and diseases, and exceptional yield.
Leilani Mroczkowski. Leilani develops new garden curricula for our education program, geared toward children and adults. She is skilled at translating the science of growing food into a format that is easy to understand and remember – from seeding and planting, to daily maintenance and eventual harvest.
