When restaurant owner Eleanor Arpino was looking for a location for her neighborhood eatery in Dorchester’s Lower Mills village in 2013, the existing rooftop farm at The Ledge Kitchen and Drinks was a key selling point. Ester
, which is a cozy, comfortable restaurant with a menu that's approachable, delicious, and chock full of vegetables grown directly above the kitchen.
The System We Created
The 1,200 square foot rooftop farm was installed at The Ledge Kitchen and Drinks in 2010 by our oft-collaborator Recover Green Roofs. The Green City Growers horticulture team have maintained the garden through its different ownership, growing everythign from basil and mint to fennel and Japanese eggplant.
Where Does the Food Go?
From mid-May through November, the chefs in ester's kitchen incorporate the farm’s fresh bounty into dishes such as the Kale and Brussel Sprout Salad tossed with lemon and olive oil. However, long after the growing season ends, the ester menu includes preserved items, like house-made pickled banana peppers (found atop fried calamari) and dried herbs incorporated throughout the many delicious entrees.
